program requirements
The minimum age for our martial arts programs is 6 years of age; however, our self-defense program is better suited for teenagers and adults, due to the nature of the instruction, the real-life applications discussed, and some of the physical requirements.
For younger students, ages 6-7 are generally considered to be the best time to start your traditional martial arts journey, and no age is too old to start. If you have children that are younger than 6, then we are happy to refer to you one of our partner schools that work with children as young as 2.
Our criteria for enrollment are based on the readiness of the student, not fitness level, lifestyle, how they identify, physical ability or mental ability. We welcome a diverse environment and have experience working with many different humans with various challenges.
Prior to enrolling, we will evaluate each student for their readiness to succeed in our programs. To start, a student must minimally meet the following evaluation criteria.
.
Evaluation Criteria:
- Students must want to participate and not be told by their parent or guardian that they “have to do this”. This is a recipe for a student becoming disinterested in martial arts for good, we don’t want that; come back when you’re ready.
- Students must be able to take directions from the instructors and listen attentively. That said, we realize there are certain situations where attentiveness of individual students may be a challenge, our private lessons are a great place for these students.
- If you are enrolling in a group session, students must not be distracted by other students and must not be a distraction. Private instruction may be required in some cases before introducing the student to a more active group environment.
In general, we find that when the child can listen and wants to learn and not play around, that’s the perfect age and attitude to start a successful martial arts journey.
schools & youth centers
Instruction focuses on promoting martial arts in a fun environment, while also teaching students the fundamentals. We have limited enrollment (10 students max) and run 4 weeks in duration. Classes are approximately 45-60 minutes in length and students are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing.
We offer these programs for free as an introductory program to allow students to assess whether a martial arts journey is a good fit for them. It is important to note that our school & youth center programs are not a replacement for after-school care. Our requirements for enrollment are the same for all programs. While we will make this a fun environment, it is also not an “open gym”, we require attentiveness and respect.
certificate of achievement
When the program is completed, we will have a promotion ceremony at the last class and provide a certificate of achievement.
Students will have an opportunity to present the certificate to The Traveling Dojo and join the Get Me Started program at a discount. See “Cashing In Your Certificate” for more details.
“Cashing in” your certificate
The certificate of achievement will allow you (or your sibling or parent) one free month of instruction for a 3-month commitment in any of our standard programs.
All students receiving a certificate are also offered an additional one month of instruction if they can organize at least 5 students to participate in our small group instructional format. All students must remain in the program for at least 3 months.
See our Deals for more details.
availability
Due to the nature of our business, we have limited availability.
If a student wishes to enroll in The Traveling Dojo but we do not have availability or the student would prefer a larger group environment in a less formal setting, then we will refer the student to a partner dojo, where they will be offered a discount on enrollment when they present their Traveling Dojo certificate of achievement.

bring your dojo to work
This program is structured the same as our Get Me Started program, with these differences:
- Training is done at the student’s place of work, with prior permission from the employer.
- We only support the group format and require a minimum of 5 students to participate. We will allow exceptions to our max number of students but will accept no more than 10 students per session. If necessary, additional sessions can be scheduled.
