Our small group martial arts instruction allows students to receive more individualized coaching, stronger safety oversight, and more personalized feedback than large traditional martial arts schools. We limit class sizes to 10 students and always have at least two instructors per class.
What type of martial arts and self-defense do you teach? +
The Traveling Dojo Martial Arts teaches practical martial arts and realistic self-defense focused on confidence, awareness, personal safety, discipline, fitness, and personal growth. Training emphasizes real-world application in a supportive and inclusive environment, while incorporating traditional martial arts values. Our teachings are based on self-defense centric styles, including Jukaido Kan Karate, Judo, Hapkido, Krav Maga, Uchudo and Kempo.
Do I need previous martial arts experience to start? +
No. Most students begin with no prior martial arts experience. Our programs are designed to help beginners learn safely and progressively regardless of athletic background or fitness level. We also welcome students with prior experience and will make you feel comfortable regardless of your level of experience.
What ages do you teach? +
We offer martial arts programs for children 6 and older, teens, adults, families, and seniors. While our martial arts program incorporates our self-defense curriculum, we also offer practical self-defense specific programs for women (16+) and seniors. Programs are adapted to the needs, goals, and experience level of each student and group.
Do you teach practical self-defense? +
Yes. Our self-defense training focuses on realistic personal safety skills, situational awareness, de-escalation strategies, boundary setting, and practical defensive techniques for everyday situations. We have developed our own personal safety framework that incorporates best practices principles with real-world defense techniques.
Where are your martial arts programs located? +
The Traveling Dojo Martial Arts offers programs in Damascus, Gaithersburg, and surrounding Montgomery County communities. We also provide mobile instruction for in-home lessons, schools, workplaces, organizations, and community groups.
Do you offer private martial arts lessons? +
Yes. We offer private martial arts and self-defense instruction customized to the student’s goals, experience level, schedule, and comfort level. We will come to your home or place of work, or you have the option of training in our private dojo in Gaithersburg.
