Inclusive Martial Arts and Self-Defense
Martial arts should be accessible, welcoming, and beneficial to anyone who wants to learn.
At The Traveling Dojo Martial Arts, we believe students learn best when they feel respected, supported, and comfortable being themselves. Our goal is to create a training environment where people from different backgrounds, experiences, identities, and abilities can learn together while developing practical skills, confidence, and personal growth.
Whether you are stepping onto the training floor for the first time or returning after years away, you should feel that you belong.
A Training Environment Built on Respect
Every student arrives with a different story, different goals, and different reasons for training. Some students are looking for self-defense skills, others want confidence, wellness, personal growth, or a positive challenge. Some are naturally outgoing, while others may be quiet, hesitant, or unsure of what to expect.
Our responsibility as instructors is to create an environment where students feel supported in their learning journey while being treated with dignity and respect.
We believe that martial arts training should challenge students to grow without making them feel unwelcome, excluded, or intimidated.
Learning Together
The strongest martial arts communities are built on mutual respect. Students learn from instructors, instructors learn from students, and everyone contributes to creating a positive training environment.
Our focus is on helping people become better versions of themselves rather than comparing themselves to others.
Small Group Instruction Creates Better Learning
One of the ways we support inclusion is through small group instruction. Most classes are intentionally limited to 10 or fewer students. Smaller class sizes allow instructors to spend more time understanding individual learning styles, answering questions, and providing personalized guidance.
Students are less likely to feel lost in a crowd and more likely to receive the support they need to succeed. For many people, especially those who may feel nervous about starting martial arts, a smaller class environment can make all the difference.
A Supportive Training Environment
Unlike large competitive martial arts schools, The Traveling Dojo Martial Arts emphasizes supportive instruction and personalized coaching in classes with 10 or fewer students and at least two adult black belt instructors per class. This approach ensures students have the individual support they need. Students will be more comfortable asking questions and will build confidence gradually.
Our supportive training approach also provides training in a less intimidating and more comfortable environment.
Supporting Different Learning Styles
People learn differently, and that’s a plain and simple fact. Some students learn best through demonstration, others benefit from discussion, repetition, hands-on practice, or additional time to process new information.
The Traveling Dojo Martial Arts strives to meet students where they are and adapt instruction whenever possible to support different learning styles and individual needs. This approach benefits all students, regardless of their experience level or background, and helps create a more positive and effective learning environment.
Neurodiversity and Individual Needs
We recognize that students may bring different strengths, challenges, and perspectives to training. Our goal is not to fit every student into the same mold. Instead, we seek to provide a supportive environment where students can learn, grow, and succeed in ways that work for them.
Each student progresses at their own pace and they are not forced to “keep up” or put under pressure to test for their next belt rank. Students are ready when they feel they are ready, and when the instructors are confident they have learned the rank appropriate material.

A Welcoming Community for All
The Traveling Dojo Martial Arts welcomes students from a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences, including members of the LGBTQIA+ community, neurodivergent individuals, beginners, experienced martial artists, families, professionals, and students of different ages and abilities.
What matters most is not where you come from. What matters is your willingness to learn, treat others with respect, and contribute positively to the training environment.
We believe martial arts has the power to bring people together through shared learning, mutual support, and common goals.
Train with Confidence
Finding the right martial arts program is about more than choosing a curriculum. It is about finding a place where you feel comfortable learning, asking questions, and challenging yourself to grow.
The Traveling Dojo Martial Arts is committed to creating a welcoming environment where students can develop practical skills, confidence, wellness, resilience, and meaningful connections with others.
