Membership Criteria

The Traveling Dojo’s minimum age for our martial arts programs is 6. If you have children younger than 6, then we are happy to refer you to one of our partner schools that works with children as young as 2.

Our enrollment criteria are based on the readiness of the student, rather than their fitness level, lifestyle, how they identify, or their physical or mental ability. We welcome a diverse environment and have experience working with many different humans with various challenges.

Prior to enrolling, we will evaluate each student for their readiness to succeed in our programs. To start, a student must meet the following evaluation criteria:

  • Students must want to participate and should not be told by their parent(s) or guardian that they “have to do this.” Our free introductory lessons will help us—and you—to determine your readiness.
  • Students must be able to take directions from the instructors and listen attentively. We do understand that active attention may be a challenge for some students. Our private lessons are a great place for these students.
  • If you are enrolling in a group session, students must not be distracted by other students and must not be a distraction to other students.

We find that when the child can listen and wants to learn and not play, that’s the perfect age and attitude to start a successful martial arts journey. If we collectively agree your child isn’t ready for our program, we will work with you to place your child in one of our partner schools.
